Widow’s Bay Puts a Comedic Twist on Island Horror

“You’re never on steady ground,” says Kate O’Flynn, star of the new Apple TV series Widow’s Bay. Premiering April 29th, the show anchors its horror in a New England island setting where a local curse creates a volatile, high-stakes environment where a scream is often just a beat away from a laugh.

Showrunner Katie Dippold, known for her comedic work on Parks & Recreation and The Heat, designed the 10-episode series to avoid the common pitfall of letting humor undercut tension. By focusing on truthful reactions to the island’s supernatural threats—including sea witches and a killer clown—Dippold aims to mirror the visceral, hysterical reaction audiences have when caught between terror and absurdity. The narrative follows Mayor Tom Loftis, played by Matthew Rhys, whose desperate attempts to turn the haunted locale into a tourist destination provide the perfect foil for the island’s dark, lingering myths.

The series functions as an anthology, with episodes shifting through subgenres ranging from time-bending hotel haunts to homages inspired by Midsommar and Stephen King. According to co-star Stephen Root, the cast avoided the trap of playing toward a specific genre, instead treating the bizarre circumstances as reality. Dippold draws a parallel between this approach and the success of directors like Jordan Peele, noting that a background in sketch comedy fosters a sense of play essential for effective horror. For Dippold, crafting a jump scare requires the same meticulous timing as writing a punchline: both rely on subverting expectations to elicit a raw, immediate response from the viewer.
