YouTube Revives In-App Messaging for Video Sharing

After abandoning its previous attempt at private chat in 2019, YouTube is bringing messaging back to its mobile platform. The feature, currently rolling out to users 18 and older in the US and select global regions, aims to consolidate video sharing and conversation into a single, integrated app experience.

The new system arrives following a November 2025 testing phase, which the company identified as a top request from its user base. Unlike the platform's earlier, more open messaging experiments, this iteration prioritizes existing social connections. To initiate a chat, users must generate an invitation link within the YouTube app and share it via third-party messaging services. The interface, accessed through a dedicated icon in the top right corner of the application, explicitly limits communication to those who have exchanged these specific credentials.

This rollout follows the company’s decision to sunset its Instagram-style Stories feature in 2023, shifting focus back toward direct, private interaction. YouTube confirmed that all shared content and messages remain subject to its standard community guidelines. While currently restricted to a specific demographic, the company intends to expand availability in the coming months as it refines the balance between video discovery and private social utility.
