Nothing CEO Warns of Sustained Smartphone Price Hikes

If you are waiting for a dip in smartphone prices, Carl Pei suggests you stop holding your breath. The Nothing co-founder warns that the era of aggressive discounting is nearing an end as the cost of memory components continues to climb, effectively forcing manufacturers to pass the burden to consumers.

Memory costs have surged to such an extent that they now account for more than half of a new smartphone's total hardware bill, eclipsing the price of both processors and displays. According to Pei, this volatility has already hit Nothing’s mid-range lineup. For the Phone (4a), memory expenses doubled during the development cycle and have since doubled once more, creating an unsustainable financial landscape for hardware makers.

This trend is not unique to Nothing. Industry giants including Samsung and Google are expected to follow suit, adjusting their retail pricing to accommodate the sharp rise in component costs. Pei notes that the upcoming sale season will likely lack the steep discounts consumers have come to expect, signaling a shift in market dynamics that will persist well into next year.
