The core objective of Thread 1.4 is to enable seamless credential sharing between Thread Border Routers. Currently, many smart home users find their devices creating isolated, competing networks rather than a single, cohesive mesh. By standardizing how these devices exchange security credentials—similar to sharing a Wi-Fi password—the update aims to allow new hardware to join existing ecosystems effortlessly.
While the technical infrastructure is arriving, practical implementation remains in flux. The Google TV Streamer now displays an option to generate QR codes for network joining, though early reports suggest the functionality is not yet fully stable. Similarly, while Apple TV units running the latest beta show compatibility with the 1.4 spec, the interface for credential sharing has yet to surface. Other key devices, including HomePod speakers and Google Nest Hubs, are still waiting for their respective firmware updates.
