The platform is formalizing these boundaries to ensure guests are not burdened by tasks typically handled by professional cleaners. While hosts may still request basic cooperation—such as placing used dishes in the sink, gathering towels, or separating recycling into indoor bins—they can no longer mandate that guests wash dishes or start laundry loads. These requirements must now be displayed in a dedicated "rules and requests" section, preventing hosts from sneaking extra tasks into private messages or physical signage at the property.
Airbnb Restricts Checkout Chores to Ease Guest Burden
Starting November 20th, Airbnb will prohibit hosts from demanding that guests perform time-consuming labor such as stripping beds, doing laundry, or taking out the trash. The policy update aims to eliminate hidden expectations that require significant effort, moving cleaning responsibilities back onto the property owner rather than the traveler.

Not all hosts are satisfied with the change. Some have voiced concerns on community forums, arguing that these restrictions could pose hygiene risks and limit their ability to maintain property standards. In response, Airbnb has carved out narrow exceptions, such as allowing hosts to request that trash be placed in animal-proof containers in regions frequented by bears. Listings that continue to require extensive cleaning will be flagged with a warning to ensure potential bookers are aware of the expectations before finalizing their stay.
