Electronic Arts shutters BioWare after three decades

After defining the landscape of modern role-playing games for over thirty years, the legendary studio BioWare is closing its doors. Electronic Arts confirmed the shutdown alongside the cancellation of the next Mass Effect title, marking the end of a creative era for the architects of Dragon Age and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

The decision arrives in the wake of EA’s $55 billion privatization deal, finalized this past August by an investor group including Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, Silver Lake, and Affinity Partners. Internal communications reveal that approximately 400 employees are facing layoffs across the company, with 50 of those cuts originating from the BioWare team.

In a joint statement, EA president Cam Weber and COO David Tinson acknowledged the studio’s massive cultural footprint, noting that the choice was made with great difficulty. The closure reflects a wider industry trend of contraction, joining recent workforce reductions at Xbox, Bungie, and Epic Games as major publishers pivot their strategies in a volatile market.
