Jefferies eyes $5,000 gold by 2027 despite near-term rate headwinds

Investors should treat the current dip in gold prices as a strategic buying opportunity, according to Jefferies analysts. Despite rising bond yields putting pressure on the metal, the bank maintains a long-term bullish forecast, citing unsustainable U.S. government debt levels and systemic fiscal stress as primary catalysts for future growth.

While Jefferies trimmed its near-term price targets—lowering its Q4 forecast to $4,400 an ounce—the firm remains firm on its $5,000 target for 2027. Analysts argue that the U.S. economy cannot withstand elevated borrowing costs indefinitely, given an annual deficit of roughly $2 trillion and interest expenses now exceeding $1 trillion. This fiscal reality, coupled with persistent inflation and central bank demand, creates a durable floor for the metal.

For the mining sector, the third quarter presented a mixed landscape of rising diesel costs and operational hurdles. However, margins remain robust, significantly outperforming historical averages. While the bank noted that labor inflation is becoming a more frequent topic in management boardrooms, the expectation is for a stronger fourth quarter as temporary production disruptions fade. Investors who pulled $1 billion from the VanEck Gold Miners ETF in September may be missing the forest for the trees, as the underlying free cash flow potential of high-quality producers remains primed for a sharp increase if gold prices track toward the 2027 projections.
