Apple Proposes Commission Fees for External App Purchases
Apple has petitioned the court to authorize commission fees on digital purchases made through external links, reigniting its legal standoff with Epic Games. The proposal seeks to charge developers between 5 and 15 percent on transactions that bypass the company’s own in-app payment system, despite recent judicial scrutiny.
Epic Games immediately challenged the move, noting that Apple’s own internal analysis acknowledged its actual "necessary costs" for link-outs effectively hit zero. Epic characterized the proposed rates as a blatant attempt to circumvent the court’s guidance. With the Supreme Court also set to review whether Apple willfully violated previous mandates, both companies have approximately 60 days to submit formal oppositions supported by expert testimony.
